In 2020, the Sensate Dining Plate, designed for RAK Porcelain by Sahar Madanat’s team at Twelve Degrees, won the Excellent Product Design award in the Tabletop category. This innovative product series provides solutions for stroke victims and individuals with upper-limb disabilities, enabling them to eat independently. Featuring a multi-functional plate partition that allows users to cut food into any size, it also incorporates sensory elements to enhance the dining experience. As an award-winning industrial designer and entrepreneur, Sahar Madanat and her multidisciplinary team continue to inspire with their smart, inclusive designs.

2019

At Amman Design Week 2019, *A Shaded View on Fashion* covered the Material Innovation exhibition in Jabal Amman, where Sahar Madanat of Twelve Degrees shared insights into their approach to local materials. Faced with the challenge of relying on imported supplies, Madanat and her team sought alternatives found in Jordan, such as clay, Dead Sea mud, goat hair, and olive mill waste. Their exploration led to the creation of a bench from olive mill waste, aiming to develop materials that could eventually substitute for traditional wood and reduce reliance on imported resources.

In 2019, the Audi Innovation Award highlighted Twelve Degrees’ Pincher as a standout example of “Simplification.” Inspired by the phrase “a pinch of salt,” Pincher is a lightweight silicon device designed to allow users to measure seasoning precisely, replicating the amount that would be released from between fingertips. Unlike traditional dispensers that rely on shaking, Pincher offers a more intuitive and controlled seasoning experience.

In 2019, Jordan-based Twelve Degrees won the Audi Innovation Award for its product, Pincher, as highlighted by *Commercial Interior Design*. The lightweight silicon device allows users to add a precise “pinch” of salt or seasonings, helping to control salt intake, which could reduce high blood pressure and heart disease while enhancing the flavor of home-cooked meals. Twelve Degrees received a $25,000 cash prize to cover intellectual property registration, legal counsel, and business development costs. The jury panel, held during Dubai Design Week, will mentor the team as they further develop Pincher. As part of their prize, Twelve Degrees will also visit Audi’s factory in Germany.

In 2019, Twelve Degrees’ Jarra, designed by Sahar Madanat and Ahmad Jarrar, won the Red Dot Design Concept Award. As highlighted by Yanko Design, Jarra draws inspiration from traditional terracotta vessels used for naturally cooling water, while addressing the issue of bacterial growth through innovative glazing techniques that maintain the clay’s cooling properties. Its ergonomic slender-neck design and food-safe aluminum cap combine old-world charm with modern functionality, allowing liquids to be cooled without electricity. The result is a bottle that feels both rustic and contemporary.

In 2019, Amman-based design studio Twelve Degrees won the Audi Innovation Award for the Middle East at Dubai Design Week for their innovative product, the Pincher. Themed around “Simplification,” the award recognized Twelve Degrees’ elegantly designed salt dispenser, which allows users to control the flow of seasoning with a pinch, mimicking the natural motion of adding a “pinch” of salt. This clever silicon container provides a more intuitive user experience compared to traditional shakers.

Twelve Degrees received $25,000 worth of consulting services and a trip to Audi HQ in Ingolstadt. This marked their second win, following their 2016 Audi Innovation Award victory for the One Handed Tableware Set, now evolved into the HandyPlate product line, designed to assist one-handed users in cutting food.

In 2019, *Al Bawaba* reported that Audi Middle East awarded Jordan-based Twelve Degrees the fourth Audi Innovation Award at Dubai Design Week. Their winning product, Pincher, translates the cooking phrase “a pinch of salt” into a lightweight silicon device that precisely controls the flow of seasoning. This design provides a more intuitive user experience compared to traditional dispensers. Twelve Degrees will receive a trophy, $25,000 in consultancy for IP registration, legal counseling, and business development, as well as a trip to Audi’s factory in Ingolstadt, Germany. Audi Middle East will also provide design advice and mentoring to further develop and protect the Pincher concept.

In 2019, Twelve Degrees won the Audi Innovation Award at Dubai Design Week for their product, Pincher. Aligned with the year’s theme of “Simplification,” inspired by Audi’s brand value of personal freedom, Pincher reimagines the traditional seasoning process. The silicon dispenser mimics the natural motion of pinching, allowing users to control the amount of seasoning released, offering a more intuitive experience. Twelve Degrees, shortlisted among three projects, received $25,000 in consulting services to further develop the product.

2016

Sahar Madanat was mentioned in Entrepreneur Middle East’s January 2016 issue in an article highlighting her views on innovation in product design. She emphasized the need for companies in the MENA region to shift from being market followers to leaders by introducing innovative products that people not only need but also want. She stressed that it’s not enough to merely replicate Western designs, as countries like China would outperform in speed and cost. Instead, Sahar argued that successful products must bring something fresh and distinctive to stay competitive in a globalized market

In a 2016 article by Wamda, Sahar Madanat discussed her design philosophy and the work of her Amman-based studio, Twelve Degrees. Known for functional and innovative products like a single-handed plate set and sand art-inspired table lamps, Madanat emphasized the importance of balancing aesthetics and usability. Madanat’s studio, based in Amman, serves as a platform to nurture local talent and contribute to the region’s design landscape.

2013

In 2013, *Yanko Design* highlighted Sahar Madanat’s innovative product, *Plate-Oh!*, a biodegradable plate constructed with 10 individual layers. Instead of discarding the plate after one use, consumers can peel away the top used layer, revealing a fresh plate underneath. This concept extends the lifecycle of paper plates, reducing waste, and eliminating the need for water-consuming clean-up. The plate’s compact design features a natural adhesive around the edges to hold the layers together, except for one corner left unglued for easy peeling. This solution combines practicality with sustainability, addressing both environmental impact and user convenience.
